Crayon Shin-chan (Japanese: クレヨンしんちゃん, Hepburn: Kureyon Shin-chan), commonly known as SHIN CHAN, is a beloved Japanese manga series crafted by Yoshito Usui. The series chronicles the whimsical escapades of five-year-old Shinnosuke “Shin” Nohara, along with his family—his parents, baby sister, and dog—as well as his neighbors and best friends. Their adventures unfold in the charming setting of Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.
The manga made its debut in 1990 in the Japanese weekly magazine Weekly Manga Action, published by Futabasha. The original run of the series concluded on September 11, 2009, following the untimely death of its creator, Yoshito Usui. However, the story continued with a new series, New Crayon Shin-chan (新クレヨンしんちゃん, Shin Kureyon Shin-chan), launched in the summer of 2010 by Usui’s team.
Crayon Shin-chan’s popularity extended beyond the manga pages with an animated television adaptation that began airing on TV Asahi in 1992. This show has been a global phenomenon, still ongoing and broadcast on various networks worldwide. The series boasts over 1000 episodes and 26 feature-length films, having been dubbed into 30 languages and aired in 45 countries. The manga itself has sold more than 148 million copies across 15 countries, ranking as the eleventh best-selling manga series of all time.
Yoshito Usui initially introduced Crayon Shin-chan as a spin-off from his earlier series, Darakuya Store Monogatari (だらくやストア物語), featuring the character Shinnosuke Nikaido (二階堂信之介). The chapters of Crayon Shin-chan were compiled into 50 tankōbon volumes, published under Futabasha’s Action Comics imprint from April 11, 1992, to July 10, 2010.
